A Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure intended to make the patient look and feel better about his or her appearance. Meanwhile, a Functional Rhinoplasty, or Septoplasty, is a medically necessary procedure recommended for patients with difficulty breathing.
When nasal surgery is required for breathing difficulty or a nasal deformity, it is referred to as a Functional Rhinoplasty. In the United States, health insurance may cover functional surgery to correct breathing issues, and may cover reconstructive surgery if the cause is medical or there has been recent trauma or injury to your nose. Surgical techniques performed to the nose that are designed to strictly improve appearance, but that do not improve function, are considered cosmetic surgery and are not covered by insurance.
Frequently, patients who will be undergoing a Functional Rhinoplasty also wish to use that opportunity to have cosmetic work performed – since they will already be under anesthesia and the surgeon will be already working on the nose.
